How to Build a Deck Around an Above Ground Pool

Five things that are not optional

Get these wrong and the deck either fails inspection, voids your pool warranty, or fails structurally. Everything else on this page is technique; these five are rules.

Rule 1

The deck never touches the pool

It stands entirely on its own posts and footings, with a 4 to 6 inch gap between the deck edge and the pool rim. A pool wall is thin steel or resin restraining tens of thousands of pounds of water — it carries no structural load, and bolting framing to one voids every manufacturer warranty in the industry.

Rule 2

Footings go below the frost line

Frost heave lifts shallow footings unevenly every winter and racks the frame. Depth is set by your county, not by convention — anywhere from 12 inches in the south to 60 in northern states.

Rule 3

Electrical bonding by a licensed electrician

The pool shell, ladder, pump and any metal within 5 ft of the water — including metal deck framing and aluminium railing — must be bonded together with #8 solid copper. This is a life-safety requirement, it is inspected, and it is not a DIY item.

Rule 4

Permit before you dig

Any deck surface more than 30 inches above grade needs a building permit in almost every US municipality, and the pool triggers separate barrier requirements. Building first and asking later can mean tearing it out.

Rule 5

Leave a removable section

The liner lasts 8 to 12 years and the pool 15 to 20; the deck lasts 20 to 30. Frame one bay with screwed-down rather than glued decking, and size the opening so a wall panel can come out without demolition.

  • 9 × concrete footings — 12 in diameter tube forms, depth per frost line. Around 45 to 55 bags of 60 lb mix
  • 9 × 6×6 posts — pressure-treated, ground-contact rated, on galvanised standoff bases
  • Beams — doubled 2×10 pressure-treated, one per post line
  • Joists — 2×8 pressure-treated at 16 in centres for timber decking, 12 in for composite
  • Blocking — 2×8 offcuts at mid-span and along the pool-side edge
  • Hardware — galvanised or stainless joist hangers, structural screws, ½ in through-bolts, post bases. Hot-dip galvanised minimum; stainless near saltwater systems

Surface, safety and tools

  • Decking — about 140 sq ft allowing 8% waste. Pressure-treated, cedar, resin or composite
  • Railing — roughly 30 linear ft plus a self-closing, self-latching gate
  • Stairs — stringers, treads, handrail, concrete landing pad
  • Tools — auger or post-hole digger, laser level or line level, circular saw, impact driver, framing square, string line, 4 ft level, speed square, mixing tub
  • Hire, do not buy — a powered auger for a day is $80 to $140 and turns two weekends of digging into an afternoon
  • Safety — call 811 before you dig. It is free, legally required in most states, and takes a few days
The build

Building the deck, step by step

The pool goes in first, filled and settled, before any framing starts. Building the deck around an empty pool means framing to a shell that will shift once 13,500 gallons go into it.

Check code and pull the permit

Take a sketch with dimensions and heights to your building department. Ask for four numbers specifically: frost line depth, required guard rail height, pool barrier height, and whether your jurisdiction follows DCA6 span tables or its own. Call 811 for utility locates at the same time.

Install and fill the pool first

Level the base, set the pool, fit the liner and fill it. Let it stand a few days so the base compacts under load. Only then measure for the deck — the rim height you frame to is the settled height, not the day-one height.

Set out the layout

String lines to mark the deck perimeter, keeping the pool-side edge 4 to 6 inches clear of the rim. Square the rectangle with the 3-4-5 method and check both diagonals match. Mark footing positions on the post lines.

  • Outer post line sits under the deck edge, not inboard of it
  • Pool-side posts stand clear of the pool wall by at least 4 in
  • Post spacing follows the beam span table below — typically 6 to 8 ft

Dig and pour the footings

Auger to below the frost line, drop in 12 inch tube forms, and pour. Set galvanised standoff post bases into the wet concrete — these hold the post an inch clear of the surface so end grain never sits in water. Let the concrete cure 48 hours before loading.

This is where most DIY decks fail inspection: shallow footings, or posts sunk directly into concrete with no standoff.

Set posts and cut to height

Stand the 6×6 posts, brace them plumb, then mark all of them to the same height with a laser or water level. Cut in place. Deck surface should finish flush with the pool rim — work back from rim height, minus decking thickness, minus joist depth, to get the beam top.

Install the beams

Doubled 2×10 beams, through-bolted to the posts with ½ in galvanised bolts — nails and screws alone are not acceptable for beam-to-post connections in most jurisdictions. Notch the post or use structural post caps; do not rely on fasteners in shear at this connection.

Frame the joists

2×8 joists at 16 in centres for timber decking, 12 in for composite. Hang them on the beams with galvanised hangers, and add mid-span blocking to stop twist. Along the pool edge, cut the rim joist to follow the curve in short straight chords rather than trying to bend anything.

  • Keep a consistent 4–6 in gap to the pool rim the whole way round
  • Frame an access hatch over the skimmer before decking goes down
  • Mark your removable bay now — screwed decking, no glue

Lay the decking

Run boards across the short dimension so the deck looks wider. Leave the gap the manufacturer specifies — usually 1/8 to 1/4 in for timber, and follow the spec exactly for composite, which expands more. Hidden fasteners look better; face screws are faster and easier to lift later.

Build the stairs

Cut stringers to a consistent rise and run, land them on a concrete pad rather than bare soil, and fit a graspable handrail. Make the run wider than the minimum — a 5 to 6 ft stair reads as designed and doubles as seating, for a few hundred dollars more.

Railing, gate, bonding and final inspection

Guard rail around the deck edge, pool barrier to the required height, and a gate that swings away from the pool, self-closes and self-latches high. Then book the electrician for bonding, and only then call for final inspection.

Have the permit, the site plan and your span calculations on hand. Inspectors check footing depth, beam connections, joist hangers, rail height, baluster gaps, gate function and bonding — in roughly that order.

Post size: 6×6 pressure-treated is required or strongly recommended for deck posts in most jurisdictions adopting DCA6 — 4×4 is limited to low decks and short spans. Always verify against your local amendments before buying material.

Permits, barriers and what the inspector checks

Two separate sets of rules apply at once — deck construction rules and pool barrier rules. Most first-time failures come from satisfying one and forgetting the other.

Deck requirements

  • Permit for any deck surface over 30 in above grade
  • Guard rail minimum 36 in high (42 in in some jurisdictions) on any edge over 30 in
  • Baluster gap under 4 in, so a sphere of that diameter cannot pass
  • Stair handrail graspable, 34 to 38 in above the nosing
  • Footings below frost line, on undisturbed soil
  • Beam connections bolted, not nailed or screwed alone

Pool barrier requirements

  • Barrier height minimum 48 in around the water
  • Gate self-closing, self-latching, swinging away from the pool
  • Latch height at least 54 in from the ground
  • No climbable surface within 3 ft outside the barrier
  • Ladder removable or lockable where it is the access point
  • Bonding #8 solid copper to shell, ladder, pump and metal within 5 ft

Seven mistakes that cost the most to fix

Structural

Fastening framing to the pool wall

The single most common serious error. It voids the warranty and puts point loads on a wall designed only to restrain water.

Instead: free-standing posts, 4–6 in clear of the rim.
Structural

Footings above the frost line

Looks fine the first summer. By the third winter the frame has racked, the decking has opened up and the rail is out of plumb.

Instead: confirm your county depth, then add 6 in.
Sequencing

Framing before the pool is filled

The base compacts under 13,500 gallons. Frame to an empty pool and your flush deck ends up an inch proud of the rim.

Instead: fill, wait a few days, then measure.
Finish

Deck lower than the pool rim

Even three inches low leaves a visible band of pool wall, and the whole build reads as an afterthought rather than semi-inground.

Instead: work back from rim height when cutting posts.

Decking over the skimmer

Discovered the first time the skimmer basket needs emptying, which is weekly.

Instead: frame a hinged hatch before decking goes down.
Long term

No removable section

The pool needs replacing in 15 to 20 years while the deck still has a decade left. Without an opening, that means demolition.

Wrong joist spacing for composite

Composite laid on 16 in centres sags visibly within two seasons and cannot be fixed without lifting every board.

Should you build it yourself?

Framing a half deck is a realistic intermediate project — it is repetitive carpentry with a clear right answer at every step, and you save $2,800 to $8,400. A wrap-around on a round pool is a different job: curved rim framing, twice the railing, and no forgiving straight runs. A multi-level deck is contractor work.

The split most people land on is the sensible one: hire the pool installation, build the deck yourself. Pool levelling needs experience and carries a warranty you do not want to void; deck framing needs a circular saw and a span table.
