Do it the other way round: decide the deck style first, work backwards to the footprint, and buy the largest pool that leaves 3 ft of clearance on every side. Buttress straps — ask before you buy Traditional oval pools brace the long sides with external buttress straps that stick out 3 to 4 ft on each side. Every one of them has to be framed around, which adds cost, eats yard space the footprint table does not show, and complicates a wrap-around badly. Buttress-free oval models cost $600 to $1,500 more upfront and are markedly cheaper and cleaner to deck. On any oval with a deck, buy buttress-free.

Rectangular above ground pools sit at the edge of the category — semi-inground territory, priced closer to a small inground build. What they offer is the cheapest decking per square foot of any shape, because every run is straight. No curved framing, no chord-cutting, no waste.

They are also the shape that reads most convincingly as an inground pool once the deck is framed flush and the wall is skirted. A 16 × 32 rectangular with a flush composite surround at $30,000 to $39,400 is doing a job an inground pool would charge $60,000 for.

Wall height

Pool wall height and what it does to the deck

Wall height is quoted in three standard sizes and is easy to overlook. It sets the height of the entire deck, which sets the framing, the footings and whether you need guard rails at all.

48 inch wall

Around 42 in of water

Cheapest pool and cheapest deck. At this height a low deck can sometimes stay under the 30 inch guard-rail threshold on the outer edge, saving railing cost. Too shallow for comfortable adult swimming.

52 inch wall

Around 46 in of water

The standard, and what every figure on this page assumes. Deep enough for adults, and the height most deck kits and packages are designed around.

54 inch wall

Around 48 in of water

Adds roughly $300 to $700 to the pool and a similar amount to the deck through taller posts and more railing. Worth it if adults will actually swim rather than stand.

That means a 52 inch pool gets a deck roughly 52 inches off the ground — which is well over the 30 inch threshold, so full guard rails, a 4 ft pool barrier and a self-latching gate are all required. What size yard do I need for a 24 ft above ground pool with a deck?
A 24 ft round pool with a half deck needs roughly 38 × 30 ft of clear yard, including 3 ft of working clearance on each side. With a full wrap-around deck it needs about 42 × 42 ft. Local setback rules from fences and property lines are on top of that, and vary by municipality.
What is the most popular above ground pool size with a deck?
24 ft round. It holds about 13,500 gallons, comfortably fits eight to ten swimmers, and is the size at which a wrap-around deck looks proportional rather than like a walkway. It is also the most searched size by a wide margin, which is why most deck kits are designed around it.
Is a round or oval pool better with a deck?
Round, if the yard allows it. A round pool gives more water for less perimeter, so there is less edge to frame and less railing to buy. Choose oval when the yard is long and narrow — and if you do, buy a buttress-free model, because external buttress straps have to be framed around and add real cost to any deck.

Does a bigger pool cost much more to deck?
